Description

Made in London by the famous maker of precision measuring tools E.R. Watts in 1941. This Clinometer or Gunners quadrant was used to set or check the elevation ( angle)  for an artillery piece or mortar. The tool is heavy with the main casting being solid brass painted black over much of its surface . There is a swing arm that pivots and can be set at various angle ( 0-44 degrees on one side and 45-89 on the other) . There is a sliding bubble level that can be moved back and forth along this swing arm. The swing arm is graduated in minutes and depending on the location of the bubble and swing arm an angle can be measured or set in degrees and minutes. Beneath the sliding bubble is a knurled knob the to lock the bubble in position. This knob is stuck as it has not been used in many decades.  Luckily it is stuck such that the bubble can be moved back and forth ( it isn't tight! ) . This could easily be remedied with some light machine oil. The bubble is in good shape and as it should be. The tool has the usual wear and signs of use consistent with its age. A beautiful tool !
